Why is tackle football for 5-year-olds a good idea?

As of several years ago, Pop Warner Football sponsors a tackle division for five- and six-year-olds. I have a hard time understanding why.

Five-year-olds are not demanding tackle football. The five-year-olds I know demand 10 more minutes at the playground or chocolate milk with their peanut butter sandwich, not tackle football.

For those kids who are charged up about the sport, there's always flag football. Kids run around just as much and it's far less violent. Why put a helmet on these kids and tell them to run over each other?

I've been involved with Pop Warner for the last five years and do offer tackle football because PARENTS demand it. If a parent wants to allow their child to participate in tackle football, which at this age level, is very organized and supervised, let them. They can control what sports they put their children in, not anyone else. The 5-6 year olds do not play a full game. They play at most an hour, they do not keep score, it is to teach the kids how to hit properly and SAFELY and well as how to get hit SAFELY. If you aren't comfortable with it, don't have your child participate. There are lots of flag football program, Pop Warner also offers flag football too!

I have four boys, tackle football is NO differnt then what they played everyday in the back yard, only it's supervised by trained adults. BTW Pop Warner is not the only football league out there that offers it.
